Crap, Crap, CRAP.

I'm a little stessed and hopefully blogging about it will help me relax.

While cleaning out the old apartment this morning, a neighbor said 'hi' to me and while we were talking she casually mentioned the raise in rent.

"What?" I asked in horror. "They're raising the rent?!"

"Yeah, didn't they tell you?"

"No! They didn't tell us anything!"

Apparently, they are raising the rent by $50 starting this August. I had no idea! Freak-out mode commenced--no one had mentioned this to us, ever!

We have new tenants lined up to take on the last month of our contract, and then they'll sign on again for a year. But they are expecting to pay $50 less per month, so now we are a little worried. What if they choose not take over the lease? If they don't, we'll have less than a week to get it sorted out and find someone else. But the WORST part of all this is that the manager is on vacation, so we're totally stuck even if we DO find new tenants. They can't sign a lease because the manager isn't there and we can't contact them. Regardless, rent is due on the 1st. If we get hit with the rent for the old apartment because we could not get a hold of the manager to sign up new tenants, I will NOT be very happy.

Is there some sort of legal thing that would get us out of having to pay that rent, since we could not get a hold of the manager? If anyone knows, PLEASE tell me... :(

I would think that since under contract you signed to pay X amount of dollars, that holds until your lease is up, so that would mean the last month aka the month these new peeps are taking over. THEN, after the lease, they will have to pay. At least that's what I think happens. Read your contract and see if they are allowed to raise the rent while you are under lease...

Good luck kiddo.

Death to Starcrest. I'll happily leave them so mean voicemails and send them mean, nasty letters.

Well, the problem isn't that they are raising the rent while we are under our lease...it is that the raise in rent will scare away the new possible tenants, so they won't want to take over our last month of the lease OR sign a new contract. No one would want to take our contract for 1 month only...

And if the manager isn't here to work with us, what are we supposed to do? It's NOT FAIR!

Why didn't someone TELL us about the rate hike sooner, so we could have time to work this out? It just doesn't feel like this should be our fault...we've done everything and more than we were supposed to do!
(ARGH!)

Well, thanks for your kind words...I guess you've been through Starcrest Hell before and understand this well.

i don't have any legal advice, just wanted to say that sucks and i'm sorry! but don't freak out just yet. probably the people who are taking over the lease really need to move into a place and can't afford to be picky with just a week left. good luck and let us know how it turns out!
